Oxo-degradation of plastics is defined by TC249/WG9 of CEN (the European Standards Organisation) as degradation identified as resulting from oxidative cleavage of macromolecules”.  And oxo-biodegradation as degradation identified as resulting from oxidative and cell-mediated phenomena, either simultaneously or successively.

The OPA will certify as oxo-biodegradable and will permit its logo to be used in respect of products which are shown by reports or testing institutions approved by the OPA, to be 1. Oxo-biodegradable 2. Biodegradable and 3. Non eco-toxic.

OPA specification for Polyethylene film products not exceeding a thickness of 100 microns.
